History

Reid Hospital and the Richmond Cancer Blood Disease Center became Eastern Indiana's first Certified Cancer Program.

Dr. Agrawal left his practice in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1986 to open the Richmond Cancer and Blood Disease Center in Richmond, Indiana and develop a cancer program for Reid Hospital. The physicians at CBDC worked with Reid Hospital and the American College of Surgeons to earn national certification for the comprehensive treatment of cancer. In doing so, Reid Hospital's cancer program became the first certified program in Eastern Indiana.

The American College of Surgeons awards certification to programs after a voluntary inspection of hospital clinical practices, including diagnosis and treatment, educational offerings for community residents as well as healthcare professionals and prevention programs. The ACS Approvals Program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to make sure they conform to those standards. Recognizing that cancer is a complex group of diseases, the program promotes consultation among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologist, diagnostic radiologist, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary cooperation helps enhance patient care.

"We are honored that our cancer program at Reid Hospital has received the ACS Recognition to ensure our program has met the national standards for cancer care," states Dr. Gaddipati.
