National Cancer Institute

A division of the National Institutes of Health. The National Cancer Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.

American Cancer Society (ACS)

The ACS is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization. Its Web site and the ACS free phone line provide information on cancer treatment, early detection, and prevention, as well as cancer statistics and information on a variety of services available to cancer patients and their families.

OncoLink

OncoLink, from the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, presents cancer information for patients and health care professionals. It also links to more than 50 journal and newsletter Web sites.

Behind the Cancer Headlines

Mabcie.com takes the recent news and research from medical journals and summarizes in lay terms.

Conversations in Care

This site, geared to physicians, is designed to help improve physician-patient communication. It includes a serialized book, each chapter being authored by an expert in the field of communications. The site has a live chat feature for addressing questions to a guest chapter author. Also included is a separate list of communications resources.

Oncology Tools

This U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) site contains information on cancer and approved cancer drugs. It includes summaries on different types of cancer, regulatory information, and other cancer-related resources.

People Living With Cancer

This Web site for patients, their families, and friends is provided by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a professional organization of health-care practitioners who have a predominant interest in oncology. The site has an overview of cancer as well as detailed information on many types of cancer. It also gives access to ASCO resources, including treatment guidelines and research abstracts from annual ASCO meetings.

Cancer Survivor

A site that provides information and support to anyone who has been affected by cancer. It enables family and friends to post questions and read stories of encouragement from those with similar experiences.

Lance Armstrong Foundation

The Lance Armstrong Foundation is a registered nonprofit organization. Its Web site includes information on a broad range of cancer topics, including risk factors, treatment options, clinical trials, and survivorship, as well as an extensive collection of links to cancer-related resources.
